FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions

ASK THE CHIROPRACTOR

Q: What is Chiropractic?

A: Chiropractic is based on the scientific fact that your body is a self-regulating, self-healing organism. The brain, spinal cord, and all the nerves of the body control these important functions. If the nervous system is impaired, it can cause malfunction of the tissues and the organs throughout the body. Doctors call this the Vertebral Subluxation Complex. Chiropractic is the science of locating offending spinal structures, the art of reducing their impact to the nervous system, and the philosophy of all things natural.

Q: How does chiropractic work?

A: Chiropractic works by restoring your own inborn ability to be healthy. A loss of normal motion or position of these bones can irritate or impair the function of the nervous system. This can disrupt the transmission of controlling nerve impulses. Your chiropractor can help remove interferences that may be impairing normal health. Since the primary focus of your care is improved nervous system function, chiropractic can have a positive effect on many health conditions not normally thought of as “back” problems.

Q: Is chiropractic care safe?

A: Chiropractic has an excellent safety record. It is the result of a conservative approach to health that avoids invasive procedures or addictive drugs. A thorough case history and examination help reveal areas of the spine that may be causing nervous system malfunction. This information will be used to determine the best course of care for each patient. Chiropractic care is a natural approach to better health that is proven safe and effective.

Q: What is a chiropractic adjustment?

A: Also known as spinal manipulation, a chiropractic adjustment is best described as a sudden and controlled force to a spinal joint. This force is not designed to be painful, and the chiropractor will either use his hands or a small, specially designed instrument to apply this force. The goal of an adjustment is to correct the alignment of your spine and reduce any subluxations.

Q: Are there any conditions that preclude getting a chiropractic adjustment?

A: You should not seek chiropractic adjustments if you’ve noticed numbness or tingling in an arm or leg, you are at a high risk of stroke, or you have severe osteoporosis or cancer in your spine.

Q: Who can benefit from chiropractic services?

A: Most people can benefit from chiropractic services, especially those suffering from back pain, headaches, or other types of pain. However, keep in mind that there are some conditions that make getting chiropractic care unwise, such as osteoporosis or spinal cancer. It should also be noted that chiropractic care is not a cure-all. For instance, if your headaches are being caused by allergies, chiropractic care will not be able to help.

Q: What conditions does a chiropractor treat?

A: A chiropractor can treat a wide range of conditions. Many patients come to a chiropractor because they are in pain. At our practice, we will first diagnose the cause of your pain, determine if chiropractic care can treat it, and then create a treatment plan if appropriate. If we find that the cause of the pain cannot be treated by chiropractic care, we will refer you to an appropriate specialist.

Patients often come to us with the following:

• Back Pain
• Digestive Problems
• Frozen Shoulder
• Headaches
• Jaw Pain
• Joint Stiffness/Pain
• Muscle Spasms
• Sciatica (Herniated Disk)
• Scoliosis
• Sports Injuries
• Tennis Elbow (Lateral Epicondylitis)
• Whiplash
• And More

Q: Does chiropractic care use drugs or medication?

A: Generally speaking, no. Chiropractic care is a hands-on medical practice that works through spinal manipulation. We generally do not prescribe medication to manage pain or other conditions.

Q: Is there anything I can do to make my chiropractic treatment go better?

A: First, follow any instructions your chiropractor gives to you. He may suggest changes to your diet or lifestyle or doing certain exercises at home. It also helps to follow a healthy lifestyle with a good diet, exercise, and plenty of sleep every night. And of course, if you have questions about how certain activities might affect your chiropractic treatment, don’t be afraid to ask.

Q: Can I see a chiropractor if I’m pregnant?

A: Usually yes. Chiropractic adjustments are safe for mother and baby, and there are special chiropractic treatments designed just for pregnant women. However, as with everything else health-related during pregnancy, you should speak with your OBGYN before seeking chiropractic services. We also ask that you let us know that you’re expecting so the chiropractor can adjust his technique if necessary.
